Some of our history:

The Inspiration

It started in the late 90's when my kids were old enough to start Trick or Treating (TOT). I would dress up up in costume with them and out we'd go! My Wife would say I got more excited about it than the kids. I think she was probably right!

In our area there were very few people that did anything special for TOT's, other than hand out candy. Many didn't even do that. But, there were a dedicated few that did, and I really appreciated them for doing it. Halloween in our area is "regulated" by the town. They designate the hours that kids are allowed to TOT (usually only 7pm - 9pm!), and several times even the day! If Halloween fell on a Sunday, or even on a Thursday or Monday, they would sometimes designate Friday or Saturday as the "day" for TOT! Not on Oct. 31st! Apparently, some people didn't like to be disturbed during the week, and somehow found it disrespectful to TOT on a Sunday, or even acknowledge this so-called "evil" holiday. To me this is utter nonsense. Halloween is about fun. So now I've made it my own personal mission to save Halloween in my town from the Halloween-hating cranky old farts and over-zealous religious nut jobs!

Early Haunts

Our early efforts were small. We were living in a apartment at the time. Our front door opened up on the street, so it was perfect for TOT. My Wife would start decorating the outside several weeks before Halloween. All the usual stuff, and she did a great job. On the big night I would add a strobe flashing up the side of the house, through the bushes, and some black lights, lit Jack O'Lanterns, and a hidden boom box with a haunted sounds CD. I would sit in full costume on the brick railing next to the front door. Still as a mouse I would pretend to be a simple prop. As the TOT's would approach, I would suddenly stand up. That's all it took to illict blood-curdling screams from the kids, and even a few parents!

As simple as that sounds, it was very effective! Many small kids would not even approach. It looked too "scary" to them. Older kids would argue out loud if I was "real" or "fake". Once they convinced themselves I was "fake", I would wait until they got right next to me before I moved. They would jump so far I would have a grin from ear to ear under my mask! At the end of the night my jaw would literally ache from smiling so much. From this a haunter is born!

Over the years this evolved into a slightly more elaborate display. I even had a "theme". I used tombstones to tell the TOT's here lies the "Spider King". The front was totally webbed out, and so was I. I had a giant spider strung up on a pulley above me and tied to my wrist. When I stood up and they jumped back, I would raise my arms and the spider would drop down on their heads or in front of their faces. 2 times the scare and fun!

Then, after years of living in that apartment we able to purchase our own home, right down the street. That brings us to our haunt today!

Our Haunt Now

Having my own house has opened up a ton of possiblities for Halloween. 2006 was the first year I had my first "walk-through" haunt in my garage. Overall it was a big success! We had at least 200 people go through the haunt in 2 hours. It was so busy we lost count! Check out this years Theme. After Halloween, I will post pics of the haunt and walk through. I am not going to spoil it before the big day! Check back after Halloween to see how it went!
